Andy Reid Says Penalty Costing Chiefs Go-Ahead Touchdown Was ‘Embarrassing’
Chiefs coach Andy Reid had a surprisingly fervent response to the heated ending of the Bills’ 20—17 win over Kansas City, one that featured sideline theatrics from quarterback Patrick Mahomes.
Amid controversy over Kadarius Toney’s offensive offsides penalty that negated a would-be go-ahead touchdown late in the fourth, Reid defended his team and criticized the NFL officiating crew instead.
Reid called the penalty on Toney “embarrassing” and noted that he normally would get a warning from the referees before “something like that happens in a big game.”
“It’s a bit embarrassing in the National Football League for that to take place, Reid said. “I’ve been in the league for a long time. Haven’t had one like that.”
For added context on Toney's penalty, CBS Sports rules analyst Gene Steratore explained that wide receivers rarely line up offsides pre-snap, which speaks to why Reid may not have seen a flag thrown for such a penalty in his 25 years as an NFL coach.
Following the wiped-out touchdown, the Chiefs would turn the ball over on downs on their last offensive play of the game and suffer their fifth loss of the season.
The Chiefs (8–5) will be praying for a more favorable (and less controversial) result when they face the Patriots in Week 15.
