Patrick Mahomes Says He Regrets His Reaction to Offside Penalty in Loss vs. Bills
Patrick Mahomes couldn’t hold back his frustrations with the officials of Week 14’s game following the Chiefs’ loss to the Bills on Sunday.
An irate Mahomes could be seen being held back by teammates as he gave referees an earful over their controversial decision to call back a Kansas City touchdown because Kadarius Toney was lined up offside.
On Monday, the 28-year-old expressed his regret over his reaction in the aftermath of the game to Carrington Harrison of 610 The Fan’s The Drive, and added that he also was contrite about the way he handled his postgame exchange with Buffalo’s Josh Allen.
“I mean, obviously you don’t want to react that way. I mean, I care, man. I love it. I love this game, I love my teammates, and I want to go out there and put everything on the line to win. But obviously, can’t do that. Can’t be that way towards officials, or really anybody in life,” said Mahomes.
“More than anything, I regretted the way I acted toward Josh [Allen] after the game, because he had nothing to do with it,” Mahomes added. “I was still hot and emotional, but you can’t do that, man. It’s not a great example for kids watching the game. So, I was more upset about that than I was about me on the sideline.”
Both Mahomes and Chiefs coach Andy Reid were critical of the decision in their postgame comments. The NFL plans to review both of their remarks, according to NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport.
“I obviously didn’t act in the way I usually act and if there’s consequences that come from it, then I have to accept those,” Mahomes told Harrison.
In a post on X after the game, CBS rules analyst Gene Steratore supported the decision from officials to flag Toney, saying the wide receiver was “blatantly” offside.
