Roger Goodell Says Controversial Offsides Call in Chiefs-Bills Was ‘Absolutely Correct’
NFL commissioner Roger Goodell addressed the most controversial play from Week 14—and possibly this season—on Wednesday.
As all football fans know at this point, the Chiefs’ 49-yard go-ahead touchdown against the Bills that included a Travis Kelce lateral was called back because receiver Kadarius Toney lined up offsides.
The commissioner, however, stuck up for the officiating crew.
"I think almost everybody has acknowledged that the officials are absolutely correct," Goodell told reporters Wednesday at the NFL owners meetings, per ESPN. "That's their job to call it a foul. ... I think it shows you how difficult it is to do their job."
After the Chiefs lost 20–17 at Arrowhead Stadium, Kansas City quarterback Patrick Mahomes torched the league’s officiating in his postgame press conference, comments that he later apologized for this week.
“I mean, obviously you don’t want to react that way,” Mahomes said. “I mean, I care, man. I love it. I love this game, I love my teammates, and I want to go out there and put everything on the line to win.
“But obviously, can’t do that. Can’t be that way towards officials, or really anybody in life.”
After a few controversial calls and non-calls during the team’s current two-game skid, all eyes will be on the officiating crew Sunday when the Chiefs visit the Patriots at Gillette Stadium.
