49ers Finally Agree to a Contract Extension With Nick Bosa

The 49ers finally get a deal done with Nick Bosa four days prior to their Week 1 matchup with the Steelers. Here are the details and why it likely took so long.

The reigning Defensive Player of the Year is back in the building.

Nick Bosa and the 49ers have finally agreed to a contract extension with. It's a five-year extension that is worth $170 million with $122.5 million of it guaranteed. On top of that, the 49ers have waived all the fines from Bosa holding out.

“Not good thoughts," said Kyle Shanahan in fear of Bosa missing Week 1. "But, you try not to think about it much because it's not really in my control and you’ve just got to let the process play itself out. Once it kind of went through the weekend, I just kind of got in my mind that we weren't playing with him. Because if I would've gone back and forth, I would've been miserable. So, I just decided we weren't. I think our team was ready to not and that was our mindset this way and it was a hell of a bonus to just get told that coming in here. So, we're obviously real excited about it.”

This is a massive win for Bosa who had all the leverage since the beginning of training camp. He's coming off the best season of his career where he won Defensive Player of the Year, named as an All-Pro, named to the Pro Bowl, and was the league leader in sacks. It really should not have taken this long for the 49ers to have gotten a deal done. They do not get credit for doing something obvious and something that should have been finalized weeks ago.

In the end, the 49ers caved with Bosa being $170 million richer.

The situation was starting to look bleak for the 49ers with Bosa. Week 1 against the Steelers is four days away, which made the reality of him missing the game more likely. I didn't fully buy into him missing the game, but it became increasingly difficult to neglect the actual possibility of it. The 49ers clearly were dead-set on playing hardball, which is why it took this long in the first place. It's a complete misevaluation of the situation as if they could skate by doing that.

Luckily, they realized how delusional it was and ended up giving Bosa what he rightfully deserves. A tough matchup with the Steelers now becomes easier for the 49ers with arguably the best defensive player in the league back on board.
