Rams-49ers Week 16: Live Updates and Analysis

The stakes are immensely high in tonight's NFC west divisional game between the San Francisco 49ers and Los Angeles Rams. Neither team can afford a loss with playoff implications on the line. For the 49ers, a loss would mean they likely do not win the division. For the Rams, a loss will end all of their playoff hopes. Both of these teams are coming off of bad losses, however the 49ers loss was more or less a cause of the army of injuries they had last week.

Richard Sherman and K'Waun Williams will be returning to the lineup, so the 49ers will have a much more solidified defense. The Rams have just been a roller coaster of a team that cannot find the straight line of consistency. They will look to find that consistency tonight against the 49ers. This is essentially for all the marbles for both teams and should be a dramatic one.

1st Quarter

15:00 - 49ers will start the game kicking off to the Rams, so it will be the defense with the first bid in. Last time the Rams opened up their first drive with a long touchdown drive. Can the 49ers prevent it?

11:08 - Sean McVay is coming for blood early. He dials up a methodical drive against the 49ers defense with bootleg play-actions as the staple. 49ers could not key in on it, thus Brandin Cooks would find the endzone over Ahkello Witherspoon.

10:53 - Richie James Jr. almost takes the kickoff return to the house, but the 49ers will be happy with a redzone spot. They can easily equalize here given the golden opportunity.

8:35 - San Francisco lets the prime opportunity to tie the game slip away and are forced to settle for a field goal. Rams will be poised to separate themselves if they can drive the field once again.

4:09 - Rams are held by the 49ers' defense, but the 49ers emerge from that drive with Richard Sherman potentially re-aggravating his hamstring injury. Do the 49ers bring him back in?

3:56 - Jalen Ramsey intercepts Jimmy Garoppolo on a baffling throw. Emmanuel Sanders was the intended target, but delivered the ball to him way too late. Allowed Ramsey to get the easy pick. Rams will take over.

2nd Quarter

14:55 - Rams make full use of Garoppolo's errant throw to drive the field for a touchdown by Todd Gurley. Safety Marcell Harris aided their efforts with a late hit to Jared Goff. Rams are living up to the pressure, while the 49ers are playing down to it.

12:06 - 49ers cut the Rams lead down with a solid drive of their own. Kyle Shanahan with the great adaptation by utilizing screen passes to negate the Rams' aggressive pass rush. Deebo Samuel is having himself a game by capping off the drive with a touchdown.

6:47 - Los Angeles is making this look way too easy. They drive the field once again for a touchdown score with the bootleg play-action as the staple. Saleh needs to adjust to it or the 49ers will not win this game.

Injury Report: Jalen Ramsey has a knee injury and is DOUBTFUL to return to tonight's game.

2:21 - This game has shootout written all over it. 49ers answer back with a touchdown drive off their own via Raheem Mostert. As great as it is to cut the lead down, 49ers defense must hold with the offense set to take the ball in the second half.

0:46 - Pick six! Fred Warner intercepts Jared Goff and takes it for a score to give the 49ers their first lead of the game. Costly mistake by Goff and unwarranted. 49ers now have the momentum in this game with the second half looming.

3rd Quarter

14:49 - And just like that the momentum is erased for the 49ers. They turn the ball over again on a Garoppolo interception that was thrown a little behind Sander. It allowed Ramsey to tip the ball and now gives the Rams excellent field position. 

13:53 - 49ers catch a big break on that Rams possession. They did a solid job keeping them out of the endzone, but an intentional grounding call made their field goal try a 52-yard attempt which they missed. 49ers have a shot to pull ahead with this drive here.

9:24 - Rams offense is now looking stagnate in their last three offensive drives. Saleh has McVay finally figured out. The bootleg play-actions are not working and Goff is afraid to stand in the pocket. 49ers will take over at their own 44-yard line.

5:06 - Cooper Kupp burns Witherspoon on a crossing route that leads to a touchdown. Defense of the 49ers had their chances to stop the Rams, but came up short. McVay also adjusted well on that drive as their predictable play-action boots were put away.

0:39 - Just as the Rams offense looked to be stagnating, the 49ers have come out in the second half of this game flat offensively. Pass protection has been shaky and is causing Garoppolo to look shy.

End of quarter

4th Quarter

11:43 - Offense of the 49ers is still struggling to find any type of rhythm. On Garoppolo's last five pass attempts, he's been sacked on four of them. Meanwhile, the defense hasn't sacked Goff once.

6:06 - 49ers take the lead back with a touchdown pass to George Kittle. Once again, Kittle has been the lone wolf on offense. Everyone has had a rough game aside from him and he just may have gave the 49ers the shot in the arm they needed. Now it is on the 49ers defense to bunker down and hold the surging Rams offense with six minutes left to go.

2:30 - It took eight plays for the Rams to drive as they tie the game on a field goal. 49ers had a chance to ice the game when Marcell Harris had the easy interception, but simply bobbled it. That may loom large depending on the result. Now all the pressure rests with Garoppolo on the offense. Can they end this? Offensive line will need to be steady.

0:35 - Garoppolo stands and deliver the potential game winning play to Sanders; giving the 49ers excellent field position for the field goal. It'll be on Robbie Gould to win this one.
