What 49ers GM John Lynch had to say About a Trey Lance Trade

Sounds like the 49ers really have been fielding calls about Trey Lance, but with some exaggeration.

What 49ers GM John Lynch had to say About a Trey Lance Trade

In this story:

49ers general manager John Lynch just wrapped up his pre-draft press conference with questions about Trey Lance leading the way.

In the last week, the 49ers have been reportedly fielding calls regarding Trey Lance for a trade. This is a topic that Lynch could have easily ducked and steered away from, but his grand professionalism was put on display when he was asked about a Lance trade with "transparency" being the theme.

"Trey and I have talked. We're on the same page," said Lynch. "Trey knows exactly where the situation is . His mindset is all about competing and I think that's exactly where his mindset should be. We're excited about the position he's put himself in with the work he's done this offseason to, number one, get healthy. Number two is to improve some things that he really wanted to improve upon. We don't get to watch all of his workouts. I've got a good view. He's definitely excited and I think he has reason to be. So yes, there has been good communication and we're excited about Trey's ability to go compete for a job."

This confirms the reports that the 49ers have in fact received calls about Lance. Teams inquiring with the 49ers about his availability is nothing to be surprised about. It's clear that the 49ers have Brock Purdy as the starter, so Lance is on the outside looking in. Any quarterback needy team would be wise to see if they can pry Lance away from the 49ers given his value is very low.

A follow up question was asked to Lynch regarding what the offers and calls have been like. This is where the report of fielding calls for Lance starts to sound exaggerated.

"I think there's a lot of smoke really," Lynch said. "It hasn't been extremely active and it's not like we've put it out there that, 'Hey, we're taking offers for Trey. Call 1-800,' you know? That's not been the process. People's job in this is to ask questions. Has that happened on a couple of occasions? Sure. But it hasn't been that substantive and, like I said, we're focused as is Trey on his ability to compete and play an integral role on this team. Last year, we needed five and so we value every single one of those guys. We're excited about our group. We really are."

So the 49ers are definitely not shopping Lance and the amount of teams asking them about him are slim. I would imagine a few teams inquired with the 49ers then if Lynch is being authentic with his answer. The main takeaway from Lynch's press conference with Lance is that he isn't going anywhere unless someone entices them with an impressive trade. That surely isn't going to happen anytime soon.

Until then, they will stand pat with Lance to see what he has in the meantime with Purdy on the mend.
