Why are the 49ers Constantly Involved in Quarterback Rumors?

Another offseason filled with quarterback rumors for the San Francisco 49ers.

It never fails that this franchise gets lumped into these every year. Whether it is Aaron Rodgers, Tom Brady, Kirk Cousins, or Mac Jones, they are just always a part of the rumor mill. You can practically guarantee that the 49ers will be associated with some quarterback whether it is legitimate or not.

This has definitely become so repetitive, so routine that it is quite tiresome to hear. I'm sure fans of the 49ers have had enough and can be annoyed with it all. I do not blame them one bit, especially when it is the same story being told over and over again every offseason. Enough is enough right?

So, why are the 49ers constantly involved in quarterback rumors?

Simple, it is their own doing. The 49ers have no one to blame but themselves when it comes to this. It has been six years and counting that Kyle Shanahan has taken over as head coach of the team. Yet, they are still searching for an answer at quarterback. For now, they believe that answer is Brock Purdy, but cannot fully crown him as he recovers from surgery on his ruptured UCL.

Because of that, the 49ers are placing Trey Lance in a competition with Sam Darnold to see who can win the starting job in the meantime. And if that quarterback can continue to play well into the regular season, assuming Purdy is still out, then the 49ers will likely stick with that quarterback. There are a lot of ways that the quarterback position can play out for the 49ers this season.

And that is exactly why they are always in the rumor mill.

The instability at quarterback is ridiculous. It is basically a circus show with the 49ers in regards to the position. Just look at their last training camp. They had Lance taking reps with the starters, while the previous starter Jimmy Garoppolo was 20 yards away working out on his own. Everything with the quarterback position is always bizarre with the 49ers and it is their own doing.

Since they haven't been close to finding that franchise guy, they will continue to be linked to quarterbacks regardless of legitimacy. You don't see teams like the Chiefs, Eagles, Bills, Bengals, Chargers, Cowboys, and other playoff teams being involved in quarterback rumors. It's because they have stability at quarterback. So until the 49ers finally have that constant and not a variable at the position, they will constantly be rumored with other quarterbacks.
