In this story:

A lot of breadcrumbs are being left by the San Francisco 49ers with their NFL draft plans.

Considering the prospects and positions they have recently been looking into, the 49ers could be in play for a quarterback. Several encounters have already been made with a handful of prospects already. The most notable ones were on Apr. 11 when the 49ers held a private workout with UCLA's Dorian Thomspon-Robinson. Another was the very next day when the 49ers held a pro day with Fresno State's Jake Haener, Stanford's Tanner McKee, and Houston's Ike Ogbogu.

These are just some of the quarterbacks that the 49ers have been digging around. It's a lot of work to be involved with so many prospective quarterbacks. A clear emphasis is being made at this position, and in a way it's surprising because the 49ers are happy with the three quarterbacks they have now. Still, their actions are leaving a trail of breadcrumbs that could reveal what is to come at the end of the month in Kansas City.

So, will the 49ers select a quarterback in the NFL draft?

100 percent they will. There is no way the 49ers are doing all of this work just to not end up selecting a quarterback in the NFL draft. It would be kind of a waste of time if they didn't take one. Now, of course, they are always going to conduct their due diligence. The 49ers wouldn't be doing their jobs correctly if they didn't. But this feels like a strong emphasis on quarterbacks heading into the draft.

While I did find it a bit surprising that the 49ers are putting this much work into quarterbacks, it does make sense with why they're doing it. Despite feeling good about Brock Purdy, Trey Lance, and Sam Darnold, the reality is the 49ers are unstable at quarterback. Purdy is on the mend from having UCL surgery and there is no telling how he will respond when he returns or if he will have any setbacks that delay his return. Lance is coming off a broken ankle and is a work in progress as a passer. With very little playing time in his last three years, he's likely still a long way off before he can be a real difference maker.

Meanwhile, Darnold is a reclamation project. He is at least no more than a failsafe quarterback that can potentially give the 49ers sufficient output on offense. So really, the 49ers should be looking at quarterbacks. One that has a lot of games under their belt so that there won't be a need to invest so much time into developing them. Besides, the 49ers need another quarterback to be third on the depth chart for OTAs, training camp, and the preseason. Purdy is set to miss most if not all of those phases.

A quarterback looks practically like a lock to be drafted by the 49ers.
