'Dream Scenario' for Bears in First Round of NFL Draft Could Result in Nightmare

In this story:
When it comes to how things will shake out for the Chicago Bears in the 2026 NFL Draft, there are countless scenarios.
Putting aside a trade up or down, Chicago could address one of their biggest needs, a list that includes linebacker, defensive tackle, edge rusher and safety.
But we also know that general manager Ryan Poles is a fan of taking the best player available, so that opens things up even more.
In the opinion of Bleacher Report's Alex Ballentine, the dream scenario for the Bears in Round 1 of the 2026 NFL Draft has Chicago taking Clemson defensive tackle Peter Woods.
Ballentine also suggested safeties Emmanuel McNeil-Warren and Dillon Thieneman as potential options.
"Chicago Bears: Enough teams buy into the concerns that Peter Woods isn't going to be a difference-maker that he's still around when the Bears get on the clock at 25. Getting their pick between safeties Emmanuel McNeil-Warren and Dillon Thieneman would be dream-adjacent," Ballentine said."
The Peter Woods concerns

The biggest reason the Bears need help in the interior of their defensive line is the team was awful against the run in 2025.
Chicago gave up 134.5 rushing yards per game last season, the sixth-worst mark in the NFL.
Woods has potential, no doubt, but right now we don't see a strong run defender who can make an immediate impact and anchor a defensive line against opposing ground attacks.
Instead, Woods is more a of a project who is going to need help from the guys around him on the field to have success.
The trouble with that is the Bears don't have strong run defenders to play alongside the Clemson product. Both Grady Jarrett and Gervon Dexter struggled against the run last season.
Along with shaky skills against the run, Woods is limited in his pass-rush repertoire and that's going to present a major issue against NFL offensive linemen.
Again, that's not to say Woods can't develop and get better, because he most certainly can.
But the bust potential for Woods is high enough to be concerned about and that's obviously something no team can afford, especially a win-now team like the Bears.
While we certainly wouldn't be mad if the Bears came away with the Clemson product in the first round of the 2026 NFL Draft, we wouldn't exactly call selecting him a dream scenario, either.
