Cleveland Browns’ Offensive Line Picture Is Becoming Clearer

It appears that the Browns are feeling more comfortable with this one offensive lineman earning first team reps during this week's training camp.

In this story:

The Cleveland Browns may be close to deciding who their best five offensive linemen are with the recent upgrade of one player to their starting offense at training camp.

After an offseason of rebuilding for the Browns on the offensive line specifically, not all of their linemen this season will be new faces.

Browns guard Teven Jenkins is one of a few returning players on the offensive line, and it appears he's been working all offseason to better position himself to start for Cleveland come week one.

During their training camp session on Tuesday, Jenkins started his second straight day at right guard with Cleveland’s starting offense. This may not mean anything concrete yet, but it does seem as though the Browns have an idea of the best way to form this offensive line.

Here’s what Jenkins earning first team reps during training camp could mean moving forward.

Jenkins starting at right guard could indicate Cleveland’s plan at center

The biggest thing with Jenkins earning more reps at right guard is that there may be a bit of a decision to make regarding their starting center heading into the season. The expectation was that Luke Wypler would be in contention to start, but that doesn’t seem to be the case.

In reality, the chances that rookie center Parker Brailsford starts week one is slim, unless he shows out during the preseason that he can be counted on. As of now, it looks like Elgton Jenkins will be taking over the duties at center for Cleveland.

He was brought in as a free agent during the early stages of the offseason and was expected to slide back into his natural position at guard. With no clear-cut starter breaking out this summer, Elgton Jenkins is now listed as their starting center.

That works into Teven Jenkins favor, as he’ll now likely have the starting right guard job locked up with Zion Johnson on the other side at left guard. Jenkins was expected to be a backup, but he may have just found himself a starting job once again.

As of now, it appears that KT Leveston has also been seeing time at left and right guard, rotating in for Jenkins occasionally. Still, the Browns would likely feel more comfortable with Jenkins starting at guard than Leveston.

Jenkins started for the Chicago Bears before joining the Browns and starting for them last season at right guard, so he should have no issue remaining in his natural position. Jenkins was re-signed by the Browns back in early March.

Cleveland’s coaching staff has made it clear they want the best five starters on their offensive line on the field come the start of the regular season. If that includes Teven Jenkins, it’ll be nice to know that they have some familiarity with one of their starters at a key position.

The Browns will see their first taste of preseason action this Saturday against the Bears in Chicago, with kickoff set for 1:00 p.m.
