Buccaneers Sign Talented Veteran Pass Rusher From San Francisco 49ers

The Bucs are bringing in what could be a valuable rotational piece in free agency.

The Tampa Bay Buccaneers have agreed to terms with defensive end, Randy Gregory, adding some much needed reinforcements to their collection of pass rushers.

The news was first reported on Wednesday afternoon by Jordan Schultz of Bleacher Report.

Gregory comes to Tampa after entering last season as a member of the Denver Broncos before before being traded to San Francisco in early October. He finished the season with 3.5 sacks and 6 tackles for loss. In his 8-year career, Gregory has accumulated 22 sacks, 27 TFL, 10 forced fumbles, and117 total tackles,

Gregory first entered the league back in 2015, where despite being viewed as one of the most talented prospects in the draft, he fell to the second round after testing positive for marijuana at the NFL combine. The 6'5", 245-pound edge rusher was selected by the Cowboys with the 60th pick, and he went on to spend a total of five seasons in Dallas

Gregory never quite lived up to the hype attatched to his name and he's never recorded more than six sacks in a single season, which he's done twice. That said, he still possesses the size, athleticism, and ability that made him such a coveted prospect less than a decade ago, but with valuable NFL experience.

After letting Shaquil Barrett walk in free agency, the Buccaneers' need for a bonafide edge rusher has been well documented. Although Randy Gregory may not be that, there's no question that he will provide talent and depth to a position group that desperately needs both.

Specific details of the contract have yet to be released, but it's likely a short-term deal for Gregory. This move does not change the Buccaneers' priority of adding an edge rusher in the upcoming 2024 NFL Draft.
