Cardinals Outline Next Challenge for Michael Wilson

Arizona Cardinals rookie WR Michael Wilson has thrived thus far, and his next challenge is a tough task at hand.

The Arizona Cardinals have been pleased with the progression of Michael Wilson through his first training camp.

Wilson was the No. 94 pick in the 2023 NFL Draft after a career that was plagued with injuries despite the obvious talent within the wideout. A great showing at the Senior Bowl helped propel his draft stock back up, and the Cardinals figured he was worth the pick in the third round.

Thus far, he's trending towards making a bigger impact than initially imagined for the Cardinals in his first year as a pro. He drew praise during rookie and mandatory minicamp and has consistently found himself open during training camp.

Wilson has certainly looked the part of a capable NFL receiver thus far, but a new challenge - and opportunity - arrives in the form of Arizona's first preseason game when the Denver Broncos come to town on Friday.

Head coach Jonathan Gannon perfectly outlined Wilson's next objective:

"Yeah, see if he can get open on Pat Surtain."

Surtain is one of the best corners in the league, already establishing himself as a legitimate defender heading into his third season.

In a recent survey from NFL scouts, coaches and executives ran by ESPN, Surtain ranked ahead of first-team All-Pro and Defensive Rookie of the Year Sauce Gardner.

ESPN's Jeremy Fowler pointed out Surtain's 12.5% target rate was the lowest among cornerbacks with more than 201 coverage snaps (Surtain played 533 coverage snaps).

"He's separated himself, and I don't think it's close," one AFC scout said. "If you're picking a team, you're taking him first."

We'll see if Wilson is up for the challenge - Broncos coach Sean Payton confirmed last week his starters would be playing, though playtime is unlikely to be extensive.

Wilson has ran with the starters and also second team, so he figures to get a good amount of snaps.
