Colts Hire Shane Steichen; Cardinals Lone Team Without Head Coach
The Arizona Cardinals are now the only team in the NFL without a head coach after the Indianapolis Colts made the decision to hire Philadelphia Eagles OC Shane Steichen early Tuesday morning.
The Cardinals are however expected to make a decision sooner rather than later, as Arizona has completed second interviews with two different candidates last week before interviewing Eagles DC Jonathan Gannon after Super Bowl LVII.
The job to replace Kliff Kingsbury is believed to be between Gannon and Cincinnati Bengals DC Lou Anarumo. New York Giants OC Mike Kafka also found himself in the mix before ESPN's Josh Weinfuss reported the Cardinals narrowed their search down to Anarumo/Gannon.
Brian Flores was also set to receive a second interview before he took the Minnesota Vikings DC job.
It's been a long road for the Cardinals, who initially targeted names such as Sean Payton, Dan Quinn, Frank Reich and DeMeco Ryans among other candidates before each fell through for various reasons. All but Quinn (who chose to remain in Dallas) took other head coaching opportunities this cycle.
The Cardinals reportedly did a lot of work on Steichen but chose not to interview him.
Arizona hopes to turn the tide quickly after a 4-13 season that saw QB Kyler Murray fall victim to a ACL/meniscus tear in Week 14. His availability for the opening of the season on top of 30+ free agents and the possibility of losing DeAndre Hopkins have made 2023 an interesting prospect of a year for potential new hires.
