Arizona Cardinals RB Marlon Mack was ruled out for the season by head coach Jonathan Gannon ahead of today's practice when speaking with the media.

Gannon said Mack tore his Achilles.

Mack was worked out by the team last week and signed last Friday. He participated in Arizona's Red and White practice and saw some action despite a limited time to grasp the playbook.

Mack was believed to be in line to take second string snaps for the Cardinals behind starter James Conner. Arizona has Keaontay Ingram and Corey Clement behind Conner but the Mack signing suggested they weren't exactly sold when it came to their depth in that department.

Mack injured himself in Tuesday's practice during seven-on-seven activities. Many blamed poor field conditions, but PHNX's Bo Brack says that's a stretch:

After practice, Mack was spotted on crutches and a walking boot.

Last weekend, Gannon had plenty of positives to say on Mack:

"Really good player we decided to add. Good job by Monti [Ossenfort]. ... We're going to try to improve our team every second that we get, so excited to have him here. I was with him in Indy - phenomenal person, phenomenal teammate and excited to get him acclimated," he said.

"He's had some really good years, he's been nicked like a lot of running backs have, but if you ask him he's got a lot left in the tank."

Mack tore his Achilles in 2020 and hasn't quite been the same player since. Since that season, he's started just one game on the various teams he's been on.

The Cardinals face the Denver Broncos on Friday for their first preseason game.
