As the 2023 season inches closer, the Los Angeles Chargers are gearing up for what they hope is a Super Bowl-bound season. They have a loaded roster on both sides of the ball and are led by star quarterback Justin Herbert so it makes sense why the team has big expectations as the season starts.

Many see them as a team in the AFC that should make some noise, especially after they reached the postseason for the first time with Herbert under center last season. But there are still some that may doubt the title contention of the Chargers. David Latham of Last Word on Sports ranked the Chargers towards the bottom of the top 10 in his NFL power rankings.

"Justin Herbert is one of the top quarterbacks in the league, and the wide receiver trio of Keenan Allen, Mike Williams, and Quentin Johnston has phenomenal potential. Replacing Joe Lombardi with Kellen Moore is a massive upgrade, the only question is whether the defense is capable of holding up their end of the bargain."

Per Last Word on Sports

Latham makes the claim that the defense could be what holds this team back, and while that could be their weakest spot, the Chargers still have a ton of talent on that side of the ball. The biggest key for LA on the defensive side of the ball will be the health of their star players.

Star push rusher Joey Bosa was limited last season due to injuries, so making sure he stays on the field will be crucial. They also need to make sure that his counterpart Khalil Mack can stay healthy as well, as he has dealt with some injury issues in the past.

The secondary is top-heavy with Derwin James Jr. and Asante Samuel Jr. leading the charge. However, the backend of the secondary is a little concerning. JC Jackson is coming back from injury, so it'll be interesting to see how he proceeds. The team will need to make sure they can get pressure on the quarterback to avoid putting too much pressure on the safeties and corners.

All in all, I don't hate where the Bolts were ranked on the list. You could make the argument that they deserve to be higher than both the Miami Dolphins or New York Jets, but rounding out the top 10 isn't a bad place to be.

It's a make-or-break year for the Chargers this season otherwise, real changes in the organization could be made soon.
