The Los Angeles Chargers enter the 2023 season with a sour taste in their mouth. After imploding in the AFC Wild Card game against the Jacksonville Jaguars, the Chargers want to put the loss behind them with a successful season. They have the tools to do so, starting with their explosive offense behind star quarterback Justin Herbert,

However, they had a clear weakness last season and while they have added some pieces to help this offseason, it’s still something to watch. That is their defensive line and the production that comes from it. Last year, the Chargers had one of the worst run defenses across the entire NFL. They ranked 28th overall in rushing yards allowed and were dead last in yards surrendered per rush. For a team that made the postseason, this shows a clear deficiency.

"L.A.'s 3-4 base defense can't thrive against the run if the defensive front isn't pushing the pocket, holding the edge and keeping linebackers clean on rushing plays."

-Kristopher Knox of Bleacher Report

Los Angeles signed former Minnesota Vikings linebacker Eric Kendricks to help with getting pressure and they drafted some talent as well. The hope is to get more space between everything to allow their playmakers to be themselves. The Chargers boast some of the better defensive pass rushing talent around the league in Joey Bosa and Khalil Mack. They also are hoping for another good season from Sebastian Joseph-Day, who provides nice depth around the edges for the team.

Not only will the defensive line impact getting pressure on the quarterback and helping aid the run defense but it will allow the secondary to thrive as well. If the line can get to the backfield quick enough or throw enough pressure in, the Chargers strong corners should benefit as well.

The defensive line battles throughout training camp and the preseason will be massive to watch. The success of the Chargers season largely will be impacted by it.
