Jim Harbaugh Brought the Hammer Down after Chargers Practice Skirmish

A little fight at Chargers training camp is a rarity under Jim Harbaugh.

Los Angeles Chargers training camp, by most accounts, has been pretty tame. 

Granted, there are some important things happening. Rashawn Slater and Tuli Tuipulotu are battling injuries. The offense continues to figure out Mike McDaniel’s new offense while Justin Herbert leads the way, new stance in certain formations included. 

But that almost casual nature of it all got broken up this week by, well, a fight. 

Let a variety of onlookers tell it, linebacker Daiyan Henley got into it with the likes of edge rusher Bud Dupree and offensive lineman Cole Strange, which led to consequences from head coach Jim Harbaugh himself.

Cole Strange, a newcomer to the Chargers via free agency, was right in the thick of it with two Chargers defensive leaders, it seems. 

According to Fernando Ramirez of The Sporting Tribune, the “skirmish” was possibly the first one under Jim Harbaugh at all. 

The punishment? All three players going with Executive Director of Player Performance Ben Herbert to a side field for "focus exercises" for the remainder of practice. 

And yes, fans at practice apparently captured footage of the dust-up that led to punishments, with Strange removing his helmet at the end of it all:

Kris Rhim of ESPN classified the situation as so: "Daiyan Henley, Bud Dupree and Cole Strange left the team period early and worked off to the side with strength coach Ben Herbert."

This is pretty standard training camp stuff for most NFL teams around the league. But as Ramirez hinted, it’s extremely rare for a Harbaugh team, hence the punishments, even for a veteran like Dupree and one of the core team leaders in Henley. 

Is it a bad thing? Probably not. A little fire in training camp during 11-on-11 work is hard to complain about, especially when the rest of camp so far has seemed pretty timid to onlookers. 

Obviously, onlookers will want to keep track of whether anything else like this happens during camp. But most Chargers fans probably won’t complain about a new starting offensive lineman like Strange coming over and showing some aggression in front of the star quarterback after how the last few years have gone in the trenches. 

They also happen to know what a leader Henley is, so it's not shocking to see a little tone-setting on that front from the heart of the defense.
