Chargers News: Top Candidate Emerges On Betting Sites To Replace Brandon Staley Long-Term

In this story:

The Los Angeles Chargers finally made some personnel changes when they relieved Brandon Staley and Tom Telesco of their duties. Losing a game 63-21 was enough to push Dean Spanos to start cleaning house.

Though Jojo Wooden was named interim general manager, and Giff Smith as interim head coach, the team will need to start working on full replacements.

That is not to say that Smith and Wooden won't be up for the job when the season is over, but there will likely be many candidates in line to serve as the next head coaches. According to bets already being made, one candidate has now emerged as the top favorite.

At 3/1 odds, Bill Belichick is the top favorite to land the head coaching gig with the Chargers. This is not at all surprising considering the legendary coach has long been tied to the team.

Belichick is more than likely to be let go from the New England Patriots, after his tenure there has soured in the last few seasons. Despite the Patriots looking like a shell of their former selves, Belichick is still one of the best coaches in the game.

Interestingly, there are two other coaches who are right behind Belichick at 4/1 odds. One such coach is Frank Smith. Smith is currently the offensive coordinator of the Miami Dolphins and has done wonders transforming the team into a powerhouse.

Though Smith could interview for the job, there is no promise he will want to leave behind the Dolphins after just one season, especially as he still gets to learn from Mike McDaniel.

The other coach at 4/1 odds is current Chargers offensive coordinator Kellen Moore. Moore made a name for himself in the offensive coordinator position with the Dallas Cowboys. Current Cowboys head coach Mike McCarthy had intended to retain Moore as OC, but they parted ways. Moore would land with the Chargers in the 2023 offseason.

Moore is a logical choice to take over the team, as he is currently their OC. Despite the Chargers offensive being marred with injuries, he has done a decent enough job to at least be interviewed. It will be up to Dean Spanos to allow the young coach his first crack at leading a team.

There are still three games left in the season for the Chargers, and the chances of them being able to interview anyone but Bill Belichick will have to wait until the playoffs conclude.

Either way, there are plenty of candidates who will likely be chomping at the bit to become the new head coach of the Chargers.
