New Details Emerge Regarding Commanders, 49ers’ Brandon Aiyuk

Will we see the Washington Commanders make a move this offseason?

There has been much to make about what the Washington Commanders have done thus far this offseason, but not so much about what they haven't.

While their offseason is obviously a success to this point, the Commanders still have concerns about a starting center on the offensive line, and perhaps the most talked-about hole: finding a legitimate WR2 opposite Terry McLaurin.

Washington has been linked to plenty of big names at wideout in free agency and trade, but the most spoken about has been with disgruntled San Francisco 49ers' Brandon Aiyuk. Things don't seem to have changed on the Aiyuk front despite 49ers' head coach Kyle Shanahan and Commanders' GM Adam Peters meeting at the annual NFL Owners Meeting, per The Athletic's Matt Barrows and Vic Tafur.

No Movement on Aiyuk Front

"San Francisco 49ers coach Kyle Shanahan spent most of the night with friend, former co-worker and current Washington Commanders general manager Adam Peters," wrote Barrows and Tafur. "Yes, the topic of Brandon Aiyuk surely came up … but probably not for as long as you think."

It comes as no surprise that Shanahan and Peters would spend time with one another at the annual NFL event, and it's also no surprise that the topic of conversation surrounding Aiyuk didn't last long, if it happened at all.

It has been well-reported how the 49ers plan to handle their separation from Aiyuk. After falling out of touch with the organization after suffering a serious knee injury, Aiyuk's contract guarantees were voided, meaning that San Fran doesn't owe him anything. Thus, they are in no hurry to release a talent of his caliber without getting anything in return.

That isn't to say that the Commanders and 49ers haven't had discussions on the controversial star wide receiver, but it's clear that the former hasn't met the latter's demands for a return. The fit is clear, and Barrows and Tafur understand that, but that has also led them to a more serious question...

"The Commanders are seen as the logical team to grab Aiyuk because of his familiarity with Peters from their time with the 49ers and quarterback Jayden Daniels from when they were teammates at Arizona State. But the Commanders have not sent over a draft pick yet, which begs the question: Are they even sure Aiyuk wants to play in 2026 after walking away from that guaranteed money six months ago?"

It's an honest sentiment if we're being honest. Aiyuk cutting off all contact and not following through properly with the rehab of his knee injury are concerning. And while it's likely that he does want to return to the field, he has yet to position himself or show that he still has the passion to be one of the elite playmakers in this league.

There is still plenty of time for things to unfold when it comes to Aiyuk, but if he does become available and the Commanders do jump at the opportunity, they will need to be extremely cautious in what they give up, along with the verbiage in his contract, to make sure they don't pigeonhole themselves into a horrible situation.
