After going 7-9-1 in 2025 despite boasting an elite offense, the Dallas Cowboys knew they had to address their porous defense this year. They believe they've done that as they prepare to enter the season with at least six new starters on defense.

Just as important as the new starters on defense is the fact that Dallas kept all 11 starters from their high-octane offense. That wasn't an easy task as they had to come to terms on an extension with running back Javonte Williams. They also kept George Pickens via the franchise tag, and have been able to keep him happy and engaged despite the lack of long-term security.

The urgency shown by Jerry Jones, which included locking up defensive cornerstone Quinnen Williams early, has been a welcome change. It's not just fans enjoying it either as Dak Prescott gave credit to Jerry and Stephen Jones, as well as head coach Brian Schottenheimer, for the work they did. Prescott, who hasn't been shy about saying he wants a title this season, claims their moves give him the confidence to openly express these goals.

“I can’t give enough credit, honestly, to [Schottenheimer] and the Joneses. I don’t think I’d be saying the goals and saying them as confidently and trying to manifest without the things that they’ve done, the decisions they’ve made, the signings they have [made], the extensions they’ve given to certain guys. They understand what we’re trying to do and the urgency in it. I think it’s as much as Jerry ever has in my tenure here,” Prescott said via Nick Harris of the Fort Worth Star-Telegram.

Jones has said time and again that he would do just about anything to win a Super Bowl, but fans have been quick to question the authenticity of his claims. Jones' actions haven't always lined up with his words, but that finally seems to have changed this year.

Cowboys defense vastly improved entering 2026

While Jones was unable to bring in a big fish, though he did attempt to trade for Maxx Crosby, he made sure to add quality starters at every position of weakness. They also added a potential game-changer on defense recently by signing Von Miller, who had nine sacks for the Washington Commanders a year ago.

The owner/general manager says they may not be done yet, teasing more moves ahead of the regular season opener. Even if Jones doesn't pull off anything major, he's already done enough to give Prescott supreme confidence in their 2026 roster and deserves credit for that.
