Perfect Dallas Cowboys Trade Candidate Emerges to Shore Up Offense

The Cowboys need to do something about their depth at running back and Tyjae Spears might be the perfect trade candidate.

The Dallas Cowboys had an impressive rushing attack a year ago, but they were overly dependent on Javonte Williams. The free agency addition had a breakout performance with Dallas, going for 1,201 yards and 11 rushing touchdowns.

Williams re-signed with the team this offseason, securing a three-year, $24 million deal. Bringing him back was a huge move for the Cowboys and guarantees they will again have a competent lead back. The question is whether they have enough depth to avoid putting too much on Williams' shoulders again in 2026.

Currently, Jaydon Blue is in line for the RB2 role but he has yet to prove he's a better option than Malik Davis. Phil Mafah is another option, but he was injured for most of his rookie campaign and has already been banged up in year two. Throw in the fumbling issues Blue has had throughout camp and it would be sensical for Dallas to bring in more depth.

Tyjae Spears may be the perfect trade candidate for Dallas Cowboys

One player who could help the Cowboys is Tyjae Spears, who was floated as a potential trade target recently by Sleeper Cowboys. As they state, Spears is entering the final year of his rookie deal and could find himself behind Tony Pollard and rookie Nick Singleton.

A third-round pick out of Tulane in 2023, Spears enters his fourth season in the NFL and has 1,048 yards and eight touchdowns while averaging 4.1 yards per attempt. He's been a decent option as a receiver out of the backfield as well, hauling in 127 passes for 873 yards and two more touchdowns.

Spears' availability is pure speculation at this point, but the Cowboys should do their due diligence and at least see if there's interest.

Cowboys have been willing to make moves this offseason

Jerry Jones has made it clear that he's open to making trades to improve the team this year and he's already made a couple of impactful deals. The first was landing outside linebacker Rashan Gary to give their defense a starting-caliber edge who can hold his own against the run and pass. They also swung a draft-day trade for inside linebacker Dee Winters, adding talent to one of their weakest positions.

With their running back depth still a concern, he should be willing to make another addition. Even if Spears isn't available, the Cowboys should be calling teams with extra depth to see what they can do to give themselves a more reliable option behind Williams.
