Eagles RB D'Andre Swift Pursued by Dolphins Before Philly Trade

The Miami Dolphins inquired about running back D'Andre Swift before he was traded to the Philadelphia Eagles.

During draft weekend, the Detroit Lions traded running back D'Andre Swift to the Philadelphia Eagles. This decision followed the Lions' selection of Jahmyr Gibbs in the first round and their signing of David Montgomery to a three-year, $18 million contract in free agency this offseason.

After the deal, there was speculation about whether the Eagles were the only team interested in acquiring Swift through a trade. However, ESPN recently reported that the Miami Dolphins also contacted the Lions to explore the possibility of trading for the 24-year-old running back.

"We know Dolphins general manager Chris Grier will perform his due diligence, as he does whenever a high-caliber player is available," ESPN wrote. "Sources told ESPN’s Jeremy Fowler that Miami inquired about running back D'Andre Swift after the Detroit Lions selected Jahmyr Gibbs in the first round of last month’s NFL draft."

While the full details of the inquiry remain uncertain, the Lions ultimately completed the trade by sending Swift to the Eagles. In return, the Lions received a fourth-round pick in the 2025 draft and a seventh-round pick in the 2023 draft, which they later utilized to select wide receiver Antoine Green.

Swift joins the Eagles with the responsibility of helping to fill the void left by Pro Bowl running back Miles Sanders, who departed for the Carolina Panthers this offseason. However, it is not anticipated that Swift will assume the same bell-cow role that Sanders held. The team has also added Rashaad Penny, and Kenneth Gainwell is expected to have an expanded role this season following his impressive performance in the playoffs last year.

As Swift embarks on his first season with the Eagles, he looks to contribute to the team's success while also positioning himself for a potential second contract, with this being the final year of his rookie deal.
