PHILADELPHIA – For a dozen years, Cam Newton held the record for most rushing touchdowns by a quarterback. Then along came Jalen Hurts, who broke that mark on Christmas Day last week in the Philadelphia Eagles’ 33-225 triumph over the New York Giants.

Newton’s record fell when Hurts bulled his way for his 15th rushing score of the season, this one via the Brotherly Shove just two minutes, 33 seconds into the victory.

Hurts isn’t much into personal goals, at least publicly. His thirst is purely for winning no matter how it is achieved, and he has won 27 regular-season games as the team’s starter the last two years.

Newton didn’t seem to mind much either that his record of 14 running touchdowns set in his rookie season of 2011 had now been broken.

"When I see Jalen Hurts doing what he's supposed to do, what am I gonna say, 'Oh he has a lot of help?'” said Newton on his 4th and 1 podcast. “Hell nah. Man break all them (bleepers). That's what they're there for.. Man, I hope that (bleep) does happen. Shatter that (bleeper). Man, I didn't play the game for records, my impact was felt. … Jalen Hurts you're doing an unbelievable job.”

Newton still holds the league record for most rushing touchdowns by a quarterback with 75 compiled during his 11-year career during which he played 148 games. He only hit double figures twice after his rookie season, however, notching 10 in 2015 and 12 in 2020.

This is Hurts’ third straight year with double-digit rushing score. Preceding the 15 he has this season, with two games still to play, he posted 13 last year and 10 in 2021.

He has 41 in his career. In addition to breaking the league mark in the win over the Giants, Hurts also pulled out of a tie with Jack Kemp for the fourth-most in NFL history. Kemp achieved his mark in 122 games. Hurts has played just 60.

Next up for the 25-year-old Eagles’ quarterback is Steve Young who scored 43 touchdowns in 169 games. Buffalo Bills quarterback Josh Allen is in second place on the all-time list and is still adding to his current total of 51 in 92 games.

“Jalen is definitely a product of a situation that is favorable to his strengths, similar to what I was, too,” Newton said. “When I see Jalen Hurts doing it, it doesn’t make me bitter. Records are documented to be broken.”
