Eagles DE Josh Sweat Looking To Build On Career Year: 'The Best Is Yet To Come!'

After a career season in 2022, Philadelphia Eagles defensive end Josh Sweat is looking for even more in 2023.

Since the Philadelphia Eagles selected him in Round 4 of the 2018 NFL Draft, defensive end Josh Sweat has steadily improved each year.

Sweat played sparingly as a rookie, but slowly began to become a regular in the lineup. He truly broke out in 2021, when he started 14 games and recorded 45 tackles and 7.5 sacks to earn his first Pro Bowl selection. Then in 2022, he had a career season with 48 tackles and 11 sacks in 16 starts, helping the Eagles' pass-rush become the best in football.

Even after that career season, Sweat believes his ceiling is even higher.

"I feel great and I feel like the best is yet to come," Sweat told PhiladelphiaEagles.com. "You figure this game out after you've been here for some time and you know what you have to do to take your game to new levels. I know it's being cliché, but it's about being consistent and building off what usually works for you. Whatever you're good at, just get better at that and stick with it."

Additionally, Sweat has developed from a young greenhorn into a veteran leader for the Eagles. He's still in the prime of his career as he just turned 26 in March, but he has cemented himself as a mentor for his teammates.

"I'm not that puppy anymore and it kills me because I know, but the other guys are starting to treat me like I'm the old head in the room," Sweat said. "And I don't like it because we're relatively, like, close in age. I'm only a year older than most of them, but I get called the old head because, technically, I'm one of the oldest guys in there now."

Even as he enters his sixth NFL season, Sweat is still soaking in every moment. He's happy to be in Philadelphia, and he's doing whatever he can to help the Eagles in their championship chase.

"Everything is still coming naturally," he said. "I know the game, I know this team and everything about being an Eagle. I'm one of the leaders here and I'm happy to help these young guys just as other players have helped me. That's what we do around here."
