Jadeveon Clowney Spurns New York Jets, Signs Two-Year Deal With NFC Team

Despite having mutual interest in each other, the New York Jets and pass rushing dynamo Jadeveon Clowney couldn't agree to a deal with the latter moving on to the Carolina Panthers.

After watching Bryce Huff leave for the Philadelphia Eagles in free agency, the New York Jets were looking to add some experience to their edge rushing group.

New York had an interest in Shaq Barrett before losing him to the Miami Dolphins. Later, the organization seemed to have "mutual interest" in bringing former first-overall pick Jadeveon Clowney to Florham Park.

Once again, the Jets were spurned for a better offer.

Clowney and the Carolina Panthers agreed to a two-year deal worth up to $24 million Wednesday afternoon as first reported by ESPN. While the Jets had an offer on the table for the former Texan, Brown, and Titan, the Baltimore Ravens - Clowney's recent team - were also interested in bringing him back.

In the end, Clowney went where the most money was given.

In 10 years, Clowney has never had a 10-sack season but has been seen as a consistent and complete edge rusher who could get after the passer and defend the run at a high clip. The three-time Pro Bowler out of South Carolina is expected to return home wo where he grew up in Rock Hill, another reason why the Panthers made sense for him in his family.

This isn't the first time the Jets and Panthers have been competing for players this offseason. New York ended up winning the sweepstakes for wide receiver Mike Williams just over a week ago - the former Charger had canceled a future meeting with Carolina to sign the deal with Gang Green.

Things were different with Clowney, though. The former South Carolina product received a multi-year deal at 31 years old, and a significant pay increase that the Jets were going to be unable to pay this offseason due to their cap situation.
