2023 Jets Country Player Profile: WR Diontae Spencer (14)

In this story:
Diontae Spencer has experience playing the underdog role.
The undersized, undrafted receiver is a small-school product from NCAA Football Championship Subdivision member McNeese State.
The 5-foot-8 pass-catcher signed with the Rams out of college, but didn't make it through the 2014 NFL Preseason before being cut.
As it turns out, his football journey was only just beginning at that point. Spencer travelled north, landing in the Canadian Football League with the Toronto Argonauts.
Then, it was onto the Ottawa Redblacks for whom he would make history in 2017. Spencer, who broke into the professional ranks through his kick return ability, set the CFL single-game record by total 496 all-purpose yards against the Hamilton Tigercats.
In 2019, Spencer finally scored another NFL opportunity. He signed a futures contract with the Steelers in January and made it through until the final cutdown day. The next day, the Broncos claimed Spencer off waivers and the receiver wound up spending three seasons in the Mile High City.
Spencer primarily served as a return specialist during his three-year tenure in Denver, averaging 21.4 yards per kick return and 9.8 yards per punt return over 42 games.
In 2023, Spencer is an underdog again. After spending much of the 2022 campaign on the New York Jets' Practice Squad, he faces long odds to win a roster spot amongst a crowded receivers' room.
His best chance to stick will be as a returner, a spot vacated when Braxton Berrios left in free agency. Spencer won't automatically inherit the return specialist role, however, as two-time Super Bowl champion receiver Mecole Hardman proved electric on specials with the Chiefs.
