Best Bet: Lions' David Montgomery Shreds Chargers' Defense

Lions' red-zone woes could end against Chargers.

The Detroit Lions understand what has contributed to their struggles offensively in the red zone.

While the coaching staff has discussed the negative plays, penalties and missed assignments, the absence of running back David Montgomery has also been a factor impacting Detroit's effectiveness.

Play Michigan writer Drew Ellis believes Montgomery will find the end zone this week.

"The Los Angeles Chargers may have a formidable run defense, but they are also running up against a Detroit Lions offensive line that will be the healthiest it has been in many weeks. Detroit isn’t going to try and change its offensive identity for anyone, so expect to see them establish the ground game behind David Montgomery and Jahmyr Gibbs," Ellis tells All Lions. "While Gibbs had a breakout performance two weeks ago, Montgomery is still going to be the goal-to-go primary ball carrier.

"Every game that Montgomery has finished, he has scored a rushing touchdown. I expect that to continue against the Chargers (-115). At some point, the Lions will be inside the five, and looking to pound the rock. That’s where Montgomery shines. That is why my best bet is Montgomery to score a touchdown this week."

Ben Johnson hinted the team could deploy Montgomery and Jahmyr Gibbs together more often, as the rookie has shown steady progress when given increased opportunities.

"He’s been effective inside the tackles. He’s not just a perimeter player, like I think the narrative might be out there for him in the run game, and then his route tree’s still growing. So, looking forward to getting him and (David Montgomery) 'Monty' both their fair load of touches," said Johnson. "They both have proven worthy of it. I was talking to the skill guys earlier this week. It’s a good problem to have right now, having some mouths to feed. So, it’s not just that room, but receivers and tight ends, as well.”
