Everything Jared Goff Said During Day 10 Lions Training Camp Interview

Here is everything Detroit Lions said to local reporters following Day 10 of training camp.

Thoughout about working with Lions C Seth McLaughlin: “Yeah, he did a good job. He stepped in there nicely and didn't miss much of a beat, mentally. Obviously he did a good job. And I don't know, I haven't seen the film. I wouldn't call myself an evaluator of talent at the O-line, but they'll be able to better tell, but I though he did a good job.”

How the communication went between him and center Seth McLaughlin: “Yeah it was really good.”

Dan Campbell recently talked about him improving year over year: “That’s good, yeah. I think it’s just human nature, you start realizing where things can slip and you don’t want to allow that to happen and the older I get, the more I'm learning and try to stay on that type of stuff. But yeah, that's good that it's noticeable. It's not necessarily something I'm conscious of every day, but I think it maybe just overall a little bit more of that mindset this year.”

What his comfort level is working alongside Drew Petzing: “Really good. I think the last four or five practices, it's really started to come together nicely where we're running stuff that looks the same but is different and able to mess with the defense in certain looks and do a little bit more than just call the play on the paper. So, it's been great.”

What growth has he seen from Jameson Williams year over year: “Yeah shoot. I mean, he's the best example of that. He just continues to get better. And the stuff that he's doing now that's nuanced, that you can't really teach, you can feel coverage and he can change his stem of his route, that little stuff has been so cool to see him start to adopt that and understand coverage and understand space. And that's the next level for him and he's done a great job of it.”

How fatherhood has changed training camp: “Yeah, makes it fun when it's over. I get to see her and yeah, it's really fun. It's really cool. Something you've always dreamed about as a player, having your child here and her being able to enjoy it. I know she probably won't remember these days, but I know I will.”

The importance of having tight end Sam LaPorta back at practice: “Yeah, he's a stud. He had a good play down the field today on third down and he's a stud. He's the same guy every day and continues to get better like they all do and got to find ways to give him the ball.”

What his initial reaction was to learning center Cade Mays is going to miss time: “Yeah, it sucks. He's done such a good job up to this point. It was kind of a freak deal that happened to him and yeah, it just stinks, but I know he'll work his way back here and be ready to go at some point.”

What him and Cade Mays will work on off the field to make sure the transition will be seamless when he does return: “Other than watching tape, no. I mean, he'll be fine. He just continues to stay on top of it and he'll be just fine.”

What he is focused on to get on the same page as Drew Petzing: “Honestly, just constant communication. Telling him what I like, what I don't like, him telling me what he wants to do and what he doesn't want and constantly talking, constantly giving him suggestions, some of them are good, some of them aren't. And that blend, it eventually blends into this thing that we both love and we're working towards that and we're doing a good job.”

What he has seen from the Lions' defense: “Yeah, it's been good. Today they got after us a little bit. I think they do a good job of creating chaos and creating hard looks. And obviously the front seven gets the notoriety right now with all the big-time players, but the backend's doing a good job too with the veteran guys. I thought (Lions S) Chuck (Clark) made a great play on me today and almost had another one on me. (Lions DB) Avonte (Maddox)'s doing a great job, (Lions CB) D.J. (Reed), when he's out there is doing a great job. They're competing, it's fun and it's competitive.”

How he defines the defense creating chaos: “A variety of pressures and looks up front, creates a lot of communication for us and creates that chaos.”

What ways Lions rookie OT Blake Miller has grown during camp: “Yeah, he just continues to not make the same mistake twice, I think. And his mistakes go down and down every day and I think that's what you're looking for. You're here as a rookie, he's going to make mistakes, it's going to happen, certainly in camp. But every day seems like it's getting less and less and he's starting to settle in. “

What are his impressions of Steelers quarterback Aaron Rodgers: “Gosh, big question. Aaron's one of the all-time greats and I loved competing against him when he was in Green Bay. Got to play him once last year, but it was always fun to compete against him as a guy I grew up watching, a guy I grew up a fan of, and getting a chance to play against him and to win and try to compete against somebody at that level, it was always great. And he's been great to me and I wish him the best.”

Thoughts on Aaron Rodgers still playing at age 42: “Yeah pretty good, something to look forward to for me.”

Would he would want to play that long in the NFL: “I don’t know, we’ll see.”

On building the relationship with a backup center and ramping it up now that Cade Mays will miss time: “Yeah, certainly ramp it up now. Seth (McLaughlin) and I, I don't know if we had a rep together until today. But yeah, he did a good job, man, he really did. He stepped in there, he was good authority with his calls, he was sharp. He was decisive, I think that's all you can ask for. You're going to make mistakes, things are going to happen, but he was decisive and he was quick and commanded the huddle well, it was good.”

What is his relationship like with Lions OL Juice Scruggs: “Yeah, same thing. I got more reps with him in OTAs and even some in camp, I believe at some point. But yeah, whenever he gets back, he’ll be in the mix as well.”

Reaction to Dan Campbell saying that he is going to push Lions RB Jahmyr Gibbs: “I don’t know, I guess we’ll see. I’m sure we’ll give him the ball a few times a game and see what he can do.”

Reaction to Teddy Bridgewater’s retirement and what he remembers from working alongside Josh Dobbs: “Yeah man, Teddy, I'll miss him, man. He was great to me, he was great to the guys around the locker room, great to have in the room. Sad deal the way it happened, but it is what it is and I wish him the best. I hope he's happy, I know he's happy and hope everything goes well for him. With Josh, Josh and I met in high school at the Elite 11, 15 years ago or so. And so I've known Josh for a long time, competed against him. He was here for, what was it, 10 days or something? He was great to have in the room then, and I'm excited to have him back.”

Does he have thoughts about how much longer he wants to play in the NFL: “No, I’m right in the middle of it. No, I haven't. I think I said this other day, until I don't feel like I can help a team win a championship. And I think that's going to be a long time.”
