Lions' Romeo Okwara Renegotiates Contract, Reduces Cap Hit

In this story:
The Detroit Lions and Romeo Okwara have agreed to rework his NFL contract.
According to ESPN, Detroit's talented EDGE rusher agreed to renegotiate his contract ahead of the 2023 season.
As a result of his nearly $9 million pay cut, the 27-year-old's cap hit for the upcoming 2023 season has been reduced from $14.5 million to $5.647 million.
Detroit has recently spent during the free agency period on defensive backs, likely signaling the need for additional cap room.
After a career season in 2020 that saw Okwara record double-digit sacks, he was rewarded by the organization with a new three-year, $39 million contract.
Unfortunately, Okwara ended up tearing his Achilles in Week 4 of the 2021 season, and ended up being lost for the year, the first season after his extension was signed.
After rehabbing for most of the 2022 season, Okwara returned against the Minnesota Vikings at Ford Field, and ended up playing a total of five games.
“It was definitely really frustrating, because it was my first time really kind of going through something like this,” Okwara told reporters. “I never really went through a major injury or surgery before, so it was kind of a first for everything."
While it was trending towards the organization cutting him this offseason, his willingness to accept a pay cut will extend his tenure in Motown.
Lions edge rusher Romeo Okwara agreed to a renegotiated contract that reduces his cap hit for 2023 down from $14.5M to $5.647M.
