Lions No. 2 Team in NFL in Post-Free Agency Power Rankings

Lions rank as high as second in recent NFL power rankings.

After free agency, the latest round of 2024 NFL power rankings have been released.

Detroit's front office decided to focus heavily on the defensive side, adding multiple defensive backs and defensive linemen.

With the focus now shifting to the NFL Draft, pundits have favorably reviewed the trades and signings made by general manager Brad Holmes.

Power ranking: 2nd

"After last season ended one game shy of reaching the Super Bowl, many people in Detroit considered it a foregone conclusion that at least one of the team's coordinators would leave for a head-coaching position. Both coordinators will return, however, and the Lions will maintain a strong foundation with the same systems in place."

It's going to be really good, especially offense, defense all around the board, just to have another year with the coordinators," Lions edge rusher Aidan Hutchinson said at the Pro Bowl in February. "It's going to prime us for a great Year 3. Well, my Year 3."

The Athletic

Power ranking: 3rd

"Lions general manager Brad Holmes and head coach Dan Campbell did their major work the previous two offseasons. Now, it’s about improving on the margins in an effort to catch the 49ers. A defense that was 24th in the league in yards per play allowed (5.5) last season has gotten all the help in free agency."

Sporting News

Power ranking: 4th

"The Lions didn't lose any strengths with their losses and were smart again with GM Brad Holmes getting off to a methodical start to addressing weaknesses. They added four more key defensive pieces to better support Aidan Hutchinson both up front and in the secondary."

"The Lions made some good moves in free agency, including signing Amik Robertson and trading for Carlton Davis III to address their needs at cornerback. Detroit remains loaded on offense and shouldn’t experience any drop-off next season. Still, believe in the Lions at your own risk."

Power ranking: 4th

"Losing Jonah Jackson to free agency was a hit, as was saying goodbye to C.J. Gardner-Johnson. But it's hard not to smile at the value the Lions appeared to receive by upgrading their defensive front and the secondary before April has even arrived. D.J. Reader and Carlton Davis will help immediately, with Marcus Davenport and Amik Robertson looking like possible upside bargains."

"The Lions added D.J. Reader to their defensive interior, and signed Kevin Zeitler to replace Jonah Jackson. Not only that, but Ben Johnson opted to remain in Detroit rather than take a head coaching job. The Lions were up by 17 in the NFC Championship Game just two months ago. They are still very much amongst the top contenders in the NFC to get to the Super Bowl."
