Three Ways Ravens Rookie WR Ja'Kobi Lane Can Boost Ravens Offense

In this story:
The Ravens should be getting rookie receiver Ja’Kobi Lane back at the perfect time.
They could certainly use him.
The “Zay And Pray” offense remains very real for the Ravens, with top receiver Zay Flowers continuing to carry an extremely heavy load in the pass game and even being asked to chip in more now in the run game with backup Snoop Huntley in for Lamar Jackson last week and the offensive line constantly reshuffled due to injury and ineffectiveness.
Baltimore could badly use a new element to be folded into the passing attack no matter who the quarterback is Sunday at Cleveland, and there is reason to believe Lane could return soon enough as he is eligible to leave Injured Reserve with the four-week minimum absence now complete. The wrist surgery did not preclude him from getting in cardio and trying to keep his conditioning base, though it remains to be seen if he requires more than a week of practice to be cleared to play.
Lane played only one half of the Week 1 game at the Colts before suffering the injury, curbing the momentum he took into the season after a dominant summer in training camp and the preseason games.
“Ja'Kobi has done a really good job,” Minter said. “I would say sometimes, when you are going through an injury and you are on IR, how much can you do physically to be ready to play, to your point, that first week back?
“I think he is in a really good place from a conditioning standpoint, from what he has been able to do with the training room and the rehab standpoint. So, we will see how that shakes out on Wednesday.”
There are some immediate ways Lane can contribute.
In The Slot
Flowers has been an absolute beast in the slot, but the guy getting the second-most run there, tight end Mark Andrews, can’t move or separate and is looking each week more like a sunk cost. Flowers has 318 receiving yards in the slot and a gaudy 16 yards/catch. The rest of the team have combined for 248 yards in the slot on 12.4/catch.
Lane was doing a lot of his damage in the preseason in the slot, especially on crossers and working the middle of the field, where at 6-4 he is a great compliment to Flowers, who is smaller and shiftier. And having the big target in the slot who can separate and capitalize on a large catch radius is even more important as the field gets constricted in the …
Redzone Weapon

This was a major area of concern a year ago, with Baltimore 27th in redzone passing. So far this season Jackson has been an expert in this part of the field and he and Huntley have found six different pass catchers on redzone TDs (all with one each(.
Lane’s body type is a natural to do damage and he is slithery and can leave his feet to make a play. Jackson had a lot of success throwing to former move tight Isaiah Likely in this areas the last few years and no doubt the Ravens had replacing some of that stuff when they took Lane in the third round.
YAC
There really isn’t anyone doing anything on this team in this regard except for Flowers. Lane and fellow rookie Matthew Hibner are their best chances to start changing that.
Flowers is first on the team with 182 yards after the catch; running back Derrick Henry is second at 97, astoundingly for a guy who rarely gets targeted. Flowers has done that in basically playing the equivalent of three games considering injury absences. Rashod Bateman is second on the team in YAC among receivers with a paltry 52 in five games.
Lane should be able to offset that wide divide even if his opportunities are fairly limited as he works back into the offense. Jackson loves big targets and has his highest passer rating throwing to tight end and Lane can certainly work a lot of areas on the field that Andrews did before he fell off.
