Packer Star Becomes Option for Steelers, Next Star WR

PITTSBURGH -- The Pittsburgh Steelers are about to begin their journey with Aaron Rodgers as their starting quarterback, marking another history moment in what has been a chaotic few years since Ben Roethlisberger retired. But there may be another Green Bay Packers star who could be the center of attention for the black and gold this week.
The Steelers, like the rest of the NFL world, got the news that the Packers are releasing former All-Pro cornerback Jaire Alexander. The 28-year-old is coming off two injury-riddled seasons but recorded two interceptions in seven games last year, and when healthy, remains one of the best cornerbacks in the NFL.
The Steelers have Darius Slay and Joey Porter Jr., with Cory Trice as their No. 3. But without a long-term plan next to Porter Jr., maybe Pittsburgh will consider adding to their room this offseason. Alexander shouldn't be expected to be an expensive contract, and if a one-year prove-it deal is on the table, maybe the Steelers get an added cheap season with Alexander before potentially keeping him as their long-term starter on the outside.
Meanwhile, with Rodgers beginning his run with the team, there are questions - and answers. The team is in need of their next starting wide receiver next to DK Metcalf. They are looking for outside options but also know they have a star waiting for an opportunity in Calvin Austin. And he looks the part.
Does it stop them from adding to their room? No. They've very open to figuring out their situation while adding another option, but that won't hurt Austin or the others too much. Pittsburgh wants options, and they'll have a few this season if they play their cards right.
