What Texans GM Nick Caserio Just Said About C.J. Stroud Contract Talks

The Houston Texans, now a little under two weeks away from the start of the 2026 regular season, have still yet to come to terms on a new contract for their fourth-year quarterback, C.J. Stroud, who has just two years left on his current rookie deal before he becomes a free agent come 2028.

After talks have surrounded both the Texans and Stroud all summer questioning whether or not a deal could inevitably get done, we're getting closer and closer to the start of the season without an agreement coming to form, leading to an increased level of doubt overall.

The last time we had an update from Houston's brass on a contract for Stroud was at the beginning of training camp. Texans general manager Nick Caserio said the team had productive conversations on a deal with Stroud, but nothing imminent was in the cards.

Now, with the three-game preseason slate officially wrapped up for the Texans and the rest of the league rosters trimmed down to 53 names, we've now gotten to hear from Caserio once again before the season, and with it, some new comments on what contract negotiations look like for Stroud.

What Nick Caserio Said About C.J. Stroud's Contract Talks

For Caserio and the Texans' perspective, it doesn't seem like a ton has shifted on their front when it comes to a new contract for Stroud since camp got started.

While Houston's general manager feels the team is in a good place with those ongoing negotiations, nothing's figured out yet for the long term. And if that holds heading into Week 1, those discussions for a new contract will simply be delayed until 2027.

"As it pertains to C.J. [Stroud]–– kind of similar to what I said during training camp. We've had productive discussions, I would say," Caserio said.

"And the reality is, will either get it figured out before the season starts, and if we don't get it figured out before the season starts, then there's something we address in the offseason. So, you know, whenever it happens, it happens."

So if Caserio's timeline holds true for those Stroud contract talks and his expectations of when to table them, the Texans have less than two weeks to hammer out a deal for their quarterback before it's too late.

Instead of hashing out that new deal at the buzzer, Stroud can just play out the fourth year of his contract, give both sides another year's sample size to work with in further negotiations, and continue once the 2027 offseason arrives to certify his future beyond the 2027-28 season.

As the offseason has progressed, that outcome has remained more and more likely to become the Texans' reality, which does have its benefits by leaving them financially flexible in the meantime, but without security on their QB1 after the next two seasons.

Nick Caserio Not Counting Out a Late Offseason Extension

That extended process for Stroud and his extension discussions doesn't always take this long for the Texans when it comes to negotiations. For some recent quarterback extensions they've hashed out––like Davis Mills' one-year, $7 million extension from 2025––that came to form less than two weeks from the regular season's kickoff.

However, as Caserio went on to address, every contract situation and the timelines they're on can be different––especially for a franchise QB1 like Stroud.

"Every situation is gonna be different," Caserio said. "I would say, look, once players get into the season, sometimes they want to focus on football and don't want to worry about dealing with the contract. And, you know, maybe it's not as clean as some others."

"So, we've done it both ways. We've done deals before training camp, we've done deals during training camp, and we’ve done deals during the season. So we'll see how this goes. I mean, this is my sense. I could be wrong. I'm wrong a lot, so I kind of see how it goes, and keep working through it."

Of course, Caserio won't be counting anything out until the Texans' season is officially off and rolling. But by reading the tea leaves around his recent thoughts, the likelihood of that Stroud deal cementing before Week 1 against the Buffalo Bills seems to continue dwindling by the day.
