NASHVILLE — The Tennessee Titans were in the news on Monday after a report from the 2023 NFL Combine had them shopping star running back Derrick Henry to other teams over the weekend. According to the latest, that may not be the case after all.

Jonathan Jones from CBS Sports put out a new report saying the Titans are, in fact, not shopping Derrick Henry and the Titans moves so far this offseason have not been any indication that the Titans wish to move on from the star runner.

Jones explains what he’s heard, “I know there is talk that the Titans are shopping running back Derrick Henry but my sources tell me they are not. I had been told general manager Ran Carthon would be ‘methodical’ in his approach to free agency and changes to the team. The releases of Taylor Lewan and Robert Woods weren’t surprising, and cutting loose edge rusher Bud Dupree also makes sense.”

Whether you believe one report or the other is a “beauty in the eye of the beholder” situation. Your lean will probably be based on what you want to happen, but it seems like both could be true in a way. Jones has a good grasp on the Titans’ situation and seems to consistently have nuggets about the team.

It stands to reason he has the ear of someone in the building and can be used as a public mouthpiece of sorts. It is reasonable to think his Titans’ source did say the Titans weren’t shopping Henry. It is also likely that Silver didn’t make up his report out of no where and at some point during the NFL Combine, Carthon had a conversation about Henry with someone. That may indicate a difference of opinion on what to do within Henry inside the building as well.

Jones makes a point at the end of his report on the Titans that seems to be incredibly valid on multiple accounts.

“I don’t believe the Titans see any tangible free agent upgrade at quarterback over Ryan Tannehill, and taking away the most essential part of the offense in Henry would indicate Tennessee is tanking more than anything.” Jones finished, “The Titans can very much contend in the AFC South, and they’ll have to do that with Henry.”

Jones is probably right that the Titans could contend for the AFC South division crown and that they will need Henry to do so, but what does winning the AFC South mean with the quality of the division? If the Titans’ organization really wants to win championships, they will need to aim higher than the AFC South crown. To get to the top of the NFL, the Titans may need to take a step back first. What they decide to do will be fascinating to watch, either way.
