Tennessee Titans Making an Effort to Trade Down According to Sports Illustrated’s Albert Breer

NASHVILLE — The Tennessee Titans are now on the home stretch and have the NFL draft in just a few days. At this point, we have heard a report about the Titans doing a number of things including drafting different players or making a move up the draft board, but per a report from Sports Illustrated’s Albert Breer, it’s a trade down the Titans have working on.

Breer did a recent piece outlining the needs of each team and who he thinks could be the team’s pick in the first round. He wrote about the Titans pre-draft work and what he is hearing about their plans before giving some players who could be potential fits.

What you need to know: I know the Titans have done the work on the quarterbacks, and some believe they will trade up. What I’ve heard, though, is the calls they’ve actually made have been in an effort to trade down, something they might pull off if the second tackle, the second corner or the right quarterback falls into this spot. If they stick, Tennessee could also draft a guy at any of those positions; if Richardson, Johnson or Gonzalez are there, it’s hard to rule that out.”

First, let’s go over the things that make sense. It absolutely makes sense the Titans have made all the calls. As part of their due diligence, they should be checking on the price to move up and gauging the interest of teams looking to come up. So, this shouldn’t be a surprise at all. Every GM should be doing this. Also, Anthony Richardson, Paris Johnson and Christian Gonzales all are top talents at some of the most important positions in football. It would make sense for them to select those players as well.

Now, let’s talk about what doesn’t make sense. If the Titans had a chance to draft the second tackle or second corner, why would they pass on that? This team needs depth so you can see why a trade down would be considered, but this team also needs top talent. Years of first round busts have left the Titans with a talent issue which is much more pressing than the depth issue. It wouldn’t seem to be wise to pass up a top talent in this draft at positions you have needs at.

Breer’s report is interesting nonetheless and it won’t be long before we get an answer as to what the Titans will do. We can’t know whether each report we hear over the next few days is true, but we can expect there will be many of them, and all of them are believable…or not.
