NASHVILLE — The Tennessee Titans made sweeping changes this offseason and with that we saw the Titans release a number of highly-paid veterans. That list included edge rusher Bud Dupree who the Titans released to save nearly $10 million in salary cap space. Now, Dupree has found a new home and coincidentally, with a former member of the Titans’ coaching staff.

According to reports, Dupree will join the Atlanta Falcons next season. While Dupree was set to make nearly $20 million with the Titans, he will now move to the Falcons at a significantly lower price. Per the same reports, Dupree will have the chance to make up to $5 million in an incentive-based deal. Dupree will hope for better statistical production and better health with Atlanta.

During Dupree’s time in Nashville, he was a disappointment based on the contract he received. Dupree signed a five-year deal worth $82 million prior to the 2021 season. As with most contracts in the NFL, the guaranteed money makes the deal look a lot different than the reported numbers. The Titans had an out built into the Dupree contract after two seasons and that is what they used to cut Dupree and save $10 million in cap this offseason even though it came with nearly $10 million in dead cap as well.

While Dupree is still a good player, he simply didn’t live up to his deal with the Titans and the mistake former general manager Jon Robinson made in giving Dupree that contract is a large part of why he is now unemployed. Dupree only played in 22 out of 34 possible games and left many games early. During that time Dupree only produced 35 total tackles and seven sacks.

Dupree will now head to Atlanta and join former Titans’ offensive coordinator Arthur Smith, who is now the head coach of the Falcons. At the price the Falcons paid for Dupree, you can see why it was something the Falcons pursued. Due to Dupree being released by the Titans, he will not factor into the Titans’ compensatory pick formula.
