Tennessee Titans Awarded Zero Compensatory Picks by NFL

In this story:
NASHVILLE — The Tennessee Titans were not awarded any compensatory picks this offseason by the NFL. This is based on the Titans’ free agency moves in the 2022 offseason. Compensatory picks are based on a balancing formula that takes into account the value of players signed and players lost in free agency.
The compensatory pick formula does not take into account players released as cap casualties(such as Julio Jones or Rodger Saffold from 2022’s offseason). Also, any player signed after the beginning of May does not count towards the NFL’s formula. With that in mind, let’s look at the Titans’ compensatory pick chart from OverTheCap.com for a visual.
None of the Titans signings or losses qualified for a compensatory pick and thus the Titans will not have any after scoring at least one compensatory pick in the last few drafts. The Titans did, however, cause the San Francisco 49ers to receive an extra compensatory pick when they hired new general manager Ran Carthon.
As part of the NFL’s initiative to accelerate the hiring of minority candidates, the NFL is rewarding teams with compensatory picks who groom and develop minority candidates in front office roles. The 49ers were awarded a third-round pick for developing Carthon into a general manager candidate. San Francisco receive an incredible seven compensatory picks from the NFL.
Whether the Titans get compensatory picks in 2024 will be an interesting thing to watch play out. The Titans could lose certain free agents like David Long and Nate Davis who, based on their expected new contract amounts, should qualify as losses in the compensatory pick formula, but the Titans could make some serious additions in free agency that cancel those losses out.
Compensatory picks are a major advantage for teams trying to build their roster through the draft. It would be nice for the Titans to get their hands on some in 2024, but at this point the Titans need some real additions to the roster in free agency that may prevent them from receiving any compensatory picks for next year’s draft.
