Carolina Hurricanes defenseman James Wisniewski will undergo surgery on the anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) in his left knee, the team announced Friday.

Wisniewski sustained the injury in the first period of Carolina’s season-opener against the Nashville Predators on Thursday night. The 10-year NHL veteran’s injury occurred on a play along the boards, after which he needed to be helped off the ice by his teammates.

The recovery time for Wisniewski’s injury is expected to be around six months.

Wisniewski, 31, was acquired by the Hurricanes from the Anaheim Ducks on June 27, in exchange for goalie Anton Khudobin.

Last season, Wisniewski played in 69 games with the Ducks and Columbus Blue Jackets, tallying eight goals and 26 assists.
