England coach Mark Sampson offered his support for defender Laura Bassett after she scored an own goal in stoppage time of the team's Women's World Cup semifinal.

The own goal gave Japan a 2-1 victory and sent England to the third-place game.

In a post-match interview, Sampson said that Bassett's play throughout the tournament "epitomized" England's spirited play during the team's run to the semifinal.

"She's been courageous, strong, kept this group together. She didn't deserve that, but she should be looked upon as a hero," Sampson said. "Absolute hero."
