Hull City will have to make history if they want to start the 2026–27 Premier League season with a statement win, as they have never beaten Manchester United in the competition.

The clubs have met 10 times in England’s top flight, with United winning nine and the most recent meeting, in 2027, ending in a draw. Hull have beaten the Red Devils only six times in all competitions, with five of those victories coming before 1980 and the most recent arriving in the 2017 League Cup.

On paper, another United victory looks likely.

Hull’s promotion last season was something of a surprise, coming through the playoffs despite conceding the joint-fourth-most goals in the division. Their success was largely built on quick counterattacks and making the most of their opportunities.

United, meanwhile, are coming off their strongest season in years, finishing third while averaging 1.74 goals per 90 minutes and recording 15.66 shots per 90, tied for the league high. Hull could therefore be facing a long afternoon if United’s attack clicks.

Arsenal also have defensive concerns, with Jurrien Timber and William Saliba unavailable through injury. That could make this a more competitive and open contest than the history books suggest.
