The new European season gets underway on Wednesday when Paris Saint-Germain face off against Aston Villa in the Super Cup final.

PSG, the winners of last season’s Champions League, won this trophy last year as well, sneaking beyond 2024–25 Europa League victors Tottenham Hotspur on penalties after a nervous 2–2 draw in which they had to come from two goals behind.

It is another Premier League giant, Aston Villa, that will try and dethrone the Parisians this year after lifting the Europa League back in May. Only eight times in history have the winners of Europe’s secondary competition bested the Champions League holders.
