Salzburg’s Red Bull Arena plays host to the 2026 UEFA Super Cup, as Champions League winners Paris Saint-Germain face off against Europa League holders Aston Villa.

PSG are competing in this fixture for the second consecutive year, having claimed back-to-back Champions League crowns. After thumping Inter Milan 5–0 in the competition’s showpiece event last year, Luis Enrique‘s side were taken to penalties by Tottenham Hotspur in the Super Cup, having trailed 2–0 as late as the 85th-minute.

PSG prevailed from 12 yards, and now they’re aiming to topple another Premier League opponent with silverware on the line.

The Parisians were given an almighty scare by Villa on their way to Champions League glory in 2025, edging past Unai Emery’s men 5–4 on aggregate in a thrilling quarterfinal tie.

The European champions are bound to head into this fixture a little rusty, with so many of their stars enjoying deep runs at the World Cup. Villa, meanwhile, have been weakened in midfield by transfers and injuries, but have had a considerably busier preseason compared to their upcoming opponents.

PSG were in a similar state heading into last year’s Super Cup. They were miles off it against Thomas Frank’s Spurs, yet still found a way to fight back from two goals down and win on penalties.

A long list of players are only just returning for the start of preseason, with the Parisians playing just twice this summer. After losing 3–0 to Mallorca, they played out a 1–1 draw against Manchester United.

Villa, meanwhile, have played six friendlies and enjoyed a tour of Far East Asia. In their most notable preseason outings, Emery’s men have lost to Porto, Real Sociedad and Bayern Munich.

It’s clear that neither team is going to be anywhere near its apex in Salzburg, which is likely to facilitate a lower quality but potentially chaotic Super Cup.

Villa’s summer defensive woes: The Villans were barely tested in the Europa League final against Freiburg, but their defense has been called into question time and time again this summer. It’s been a struggle up to this point, with Emery suffering in the absence of several first teamers. They’ve failed to keep a clean sheet in their five most recent friendlies, shelling four to Sociedad on July 28.
PSG rust: Villa aren’t exactly in an ideal spot, but at least they’ve got six summer games under their belt. PSG have played just twice, with their superstars gradually returning to the fold. It’ll take a little while for the back-to-back European champions to find their groove, but Enrique’s ingrained principles mean muscle memory is likely to kick in eventually in Salzburg.

Enrique’s roster for the Super Cup is laden with PSG’s stars. Several have returned from their post-World Cup breaks in time for the match, but they shouldn’t be expected to start on Wednesday.

Fabián Ruiz, Ousmane Dembélé, Désiré Doué, Warren Zaïre-Emery, Lucas Hernández and Achraf Hakimi are all yet to feature in preseason. João Neves, Nuno Mendes, Vitinha and Marquinhos have made just a single appearance.

PSG are all clear on the injury front, and Enrique has also included Bradley Barcola on his traveling roster despite Liverpool’s transfer interest.

Supporters may also catch their first glimpse of new signing Maghnes Akliouche and the returning Lucas Digne.

A total of 23 players are traveling to Salzburg, including summer arrivals Alejandro Garnacho and João Gomes.

Another newbie, Swiss international Johan Manzambi, hasn’t yet recovered from a knee injury that bothered him at the World Cup.

Leon Bailey misses out with a muscle injury, while Amadou Onana is out for the long haul after tearing his ACL.

Boubacar Kamara is poised to partner new signing Gomes in midfield after Youri Tielemans departed for Manchester United. The Frenchman has been out of action since January with a PCL tear.

Emery will have to decide whether No. 1 Emiliano Martínez is ready to start between the posts, given that he’s only just reported for preseason. If Martínez misses out, Marco Bizot will get the nod.
