Following the mass confusion of Saturday’s international friendly—when the U.S. men’s national team and Belgium faced off in nearly identical light-colored uniforms—U.S. Soccer announced that it will be releasing a new, emergency home jersey for the 2026 World Cup.

The design phase is complete, with the jerseys now in the production stage. The USMNT will debut them during the the May international window in friendlies against Senegal and Germany.

“This jersey is unlike anything we’ve ever had before,” a U.S. Soccer spokesperson told reporters Wednesday, following the 5–2 beatdown by Belgium. “We couldn’t risk further confusion and chaos like the players experienced on Saturday. Our men need a World Cup look that could not possibly bear resemblance to any other team.”

To achieve such a unique look, the new home jersey strays away from the traditional American themes that the white-and-red striped home kit has. Rather, it will have vibrant pink and blue swirls that flows across the front and sits overtop of a red, white and blue checkered pattern.

“At the end of the day, the organization wasn’t concerned about including American themes into the emergency jersey,” the spokesperson added. “We cared about giving the team the best opportunity to win, which means never having to hesitate about who to pass to on the field ... And when you think about it, perhaps winning is its own American theme.”

When Can Fans Purchase the New World Cup Jersey?

“We sincerely apologize to U.S. fans who have already purchased what will now be an unused World Cup home jersey, but we hope big success on the sport’s grandest stage will be enough to curb their frustrations and encourage them to purchase the new one,” the spokesperson said. “We hope they understand the level of relief and self-confidence the new jersey will bring to our players.”

Due to the condensed timeline, the new World Cup jersey will not be available in stores and online until June 15, a few days after the World Cup kicks off. Nevertheless, U.S. Soccer expects high demand for the eye-catching product, so fans can pre-order a jersey on their website beginning April 15. Only one size—men’s extra large—will be made available, though, to ensure the rapid production timeline can be met. The jersey will also come with a set of Checkers game pieces, so fans can use their jerseys as regulation Checkers boards during half time.

“The players are absolutely ecstatic about the new look,” the spokesperson said. “Aside from eliminating confusion, the jersey ushers in a timeless, classy style that will be beloved by fans for decades to come.”

This story, of course, is completely fictitious, and the USMNT will proudly wear the throwback Nike home shirt that has allowed many people’s minds to wander back to 1994—the last time the World Cup was hosted in the U.S.

April Fools!
