Georgia Hires Mike Bobo for Second Stint as Bulldogs OC
Georgia has hired Mike Bobo as the program’s next offensive coordinator, the program announced on Tuesday morning. The move was first reported by The Athletic’s Set Emerson.
“Mike has a decade of experience as a successful SEC play-caller and over 20 years spent at UGA, both as a player and coach,” Kirby Smart said in the announcement. “Mike was an excellent addition to our staff last year as an analyst, and we are looking forward to his expanded leadership on the offensive side of the ball.”
Bobo, who served as an offensive analyst for the Bulldogs this past season, will take over for Todd Monken, who was named the new offensive coordinator of the Ravens on Tuesday. Monken held the top assistant role on Kirby Smart’s staff for the last three years, during which Georgia won two national championships.
Bobo previously had an extensive stint in Athens from 2001 to ’14, initially as the program’s quarterbacks coach before he became the offensive coordinator in ’07. During that time under former head coach Mark Richt, Bobo became known for working alongside talented quarterbacks such as Matthew Stafford and Aaron Murray. His first run at Georgia peaked with him earning recognition as a finalist for the Broyles Award, given to the nation’s top assistant coach, in 2012.
After his stint with the Bulldogs, Bobo took on the head coaching job at Colorado State in 2015. He led the program to a bowl game appearances during his first three seasons, but struggled toward the end of his tenure, prompting he and the Rams to mutually part ways after the ’19 campaign. He ended the five-year stretch at the helm with a 28–35 record.
Bobo, 48, has also held roles as the offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach at South Carolina (2020) and Auburn (’21).
Georgia won a second straight national championship this past season, due in part to a dynamic offensive led by Monken and quarterback Stetson Bennett. Bobo will look to start over with a new signal-caller next Fall as the Bulldogs try to bring a third consecutive national title trophy back to Athens.
