Guardians, Cleveland Fans Tweet Displeasure in Donovan Mitchell’s Mets Fandom

Donovan Mitchell has never been afraid to publicize his love of the Mets, as the New York native has been rooting for them since he was a kid. In fact, Mitchell’s father is famously the Mets’ Senior Director, Diversity, Equity and Inclusion, which gives Mitchell a little extra interest in the team.

This weekend, though, is a new experience for Mitchell, as the Mets play the Guardians for the first time since Mitchell was traded to Cleveland. New York came back from down 5–0 to win Friday’s game 10–9 in extra innings, helped out by a Pete Alonso grand slam to tie the game.

Mitchell tweeted his admiration for Alonso, as he does occasionally, but the official Guardians Twitter account was not happy that the point guard was rooting against a Cleveland team.

Other Cleveland fans also chimed in, arguing Mitchell should root for the team in his current city instead of the one he used to live in.

Since Utah doesn’t have a baseball team, Mitchell didn’t have this problem while playing for the Jazz. Now, especially considering the rumors about Mitchell’s desire to play in New York and following the Cavaliers' playoff loss to the Knicks, Cleveland fans are a little on edge over Mitchell’s love of the Mets.
