Live score recap: Hill-Murray defeats Edina in Minnesota high school girls hockey Class 2A championship (2/22/2025)

ST. PAUL, Minn. - Two months ago, the Hill-Murray Pioneers lost four-of-six games, and it necessitated a “video doesn’t lie” meeting. The coaching staff showed the players how they weren’t playing with the correct effort. They were getting beat down the ice or not winning battles in front of the net.
“They never complained about it, and honestly since then, we’ve been the best team in the state,” Hill-Murray coach John Pohl said. “We’ve never done anything like that. … Every kid took it to heart. It completely changed our season.”
The No. 3-seed Hill-Murray Pioneers defeated the No. 1-seed Edina Hornets 5-4 in double overtime in the 2025 Minnesota high school girls hockey Class 2A championship on Saturday at the Xcel Energy Center.
For Hill-Murray, it's the third state title in program history, and its first since 2015.
After the meeting, and the losses, the players decided to make a jar where they would put slips of paper with what they wanted to focus on for that day. Sometimes it was to be a good teammate, and other times it was to play hard on the forecheck.
Last season, the Pioneers cruised through the regular season with only three losses and a draw. They rolled through their section, and they made it to the Class 1A title game, where they lost 2-0 to Edina.
The Pioneers had the best goalie in the state, Grace Zhan, but they could not come home with a state championship.
“Last year we kind of walked through the raindrops,” Pohl said.
The "raindrops" soaked the Pioneers this season, and they might’ve come out the better for it. Edina forced Hill-Murray to be at its best on Saturday, and the Pioneers overcame three deficits to defeat a more experienced team.
“They’re like a machine,” Pohl said. “They’re big. They’re strong. I thought that would be the biggest challenge, as we still have some young girls who aren’t strong, and they have some big strong girls, but it seemed like as the game went on, we got stronger.”
How do you beat the No. 1-seed by overcoming three deficits?
“When they score, just put your head down and go to work and win those little battles,” Kasey Senden said.
The little battles that the Pioneers weren’t winning two months ago.
