ST. PAUL, Minn. — The No. 1-seed Dodge County Wildcats defeated the No. 3 Warroad Warriors 4-3 in overtime in the Minnesota high school girls hockey Class 1A championship on Saturday at the Xcel Energy Center. It's the first state title in Dodge County program history.

The Wildcats won when Maysie Koch's shot hit the crossbar and bounced to Zoe Heimer, who was just behind and to the right of the goal. She shoved the puck toward a sprawling Warroad goalie, Payton Rolli, and in the scrum, the puck slipped across the goal line.

But the Wildcats had to wait for their moment to celebrate. The referees went to the booth to review the possible Dodge County goal after it was not called on the ice. The Wildcats gathered around the bench and each other and looked at the jumbotron.

One replay was enough for the Wildcats. The puck clearly crossed the goal line.

“The second we saw the first replay … our dreams came true,” Dodge County senior forward Hannah Peterson said.

The Wildcats yelled with delight, but they had to wait for the official signal from the referee, who was still checking. What to do with time to kill while you wait for your first state title in school history to become official?

“We were planning what our celebration was going to be,” Dodge County goalie Ida Huber said.

“We were wondering if we were going to go to the student section or not,” senior forward Nora Carstensen added.

Dodge County coach Jeremy Gunderson approached this championship limbo with more caution, but he knew the players’ thoughts were elsewhere.

“I was drawing up the next faceoff play,” Gunderson said. “We had all different conversations on the bench. Once you saw the replay, to try and get them back out of that mindset would’ve been very difficult.”

The Wildcats didn’t have to plan any longer when the referee blew the whistle and pointed for a goal. They rushed toward the student section.

“My whole hockey career just flashed in the back of mind,” senior Mollie Koch said.

For Dodge County—a Kasson-Mantorville/Byron cooperative—it's a state title that comes after it lost to Warroad in the 2024 championship, and one that comes for a part of Minnesota that doesn’t see many girls hockey titles.

“It puts us on the map,” Gunderson said. “We always wondered what it was going to take to get over the hurdle. … There is no better group that could represent Southern Minnesota and Dodge County.”
