Astros, GM Dana Brown Mutually Agree to Part Ways

Dana Brown is no longer the Astros general manager.

The Houston Astros revealed on Monday morning that they have mutually agreed to part ways with general manager Dana Brown.

His contract was set to expire at the end of the season, and it looks like the Astros didn't want to wait any further. Brown's responsibilities as GM will now be transitioned to assistant general managers Charles Cook, Gavin Dickey and Connor Huff, as well as to senior advisor and former Astros Hall of Famer Jeff Bagwell.

Additionally, owner Jim Crane will manage baseball operations through this transition period.

Brown was hired on January 26, 2023, after the Astros and former GM James Click couldn't reach a deal after the 2022 World Series championship season. He ended up serving four seasons with the Astros that most would agree featured mixed results.

Brown was the vice president of scouting for the Atlanta Braves before he came to Houston. Some of his key draft picks during his time with the Astros included Brice Matthews in the first round in 2023, catcher Walker Janek in the first round of 2024, infielder Xaiver Neyens in the first round in 2025 and outfielder Logan Hughes in the first round of 2026.

The Astros won two division titles during Brown's tenure in 2023 and 2024, and made the 2023 ALCS. Houston also missed the postseason last year for the first time in nine seasons. The Astros are just barely holding onto the American League West at the moment with a 65-66 record.

Brown's last trade deadline earlier this month featured the surprising move for Daulton Varsho from the Toronto Blue Jays in exchange for starter Spencer Arrighetti.

"Over the past four seasons, Dana has helped our organization win two division titles and has led our baseball front office through key scouting, draft, and development efforts,” Crane said. “On behalf of the Astros, I want to thank him for his commitment, energy, and contributions to our organization. We wish he and his family the best.”
