The Houston Astros replenished its minor-league system as a result of the 2023 MLB Draft, which wrapped up on Tuesday with the final 10 rounds.

The 20-round draft started on Sunday, with the Astros selecting a local product, shortstop Brice Matthews, who played his college baseball at Nebraska. In his final seasons with the Cornhuskers, he had a 20-20 season (home runs and stolen bases).

The Astros needed a boost on the farm system, as MLB.com ranked its minor-league organization among the worst in baseball, in part because several of the Astros’ top prospects are now at the Major League level, including pitcher Hunter Brown.

Perhaps for that reason, the Astros went with college-level talent early, taking UCLA pitcher Alonzo Treadwell in the second round, Georgetown pitcher Jake Bloss in the third round and Charlotte outfielder Cam Fisher in the fourth round.

After that, the Astros took their first prep player, shortstop Chase Jaworsky out of Rock Canyon High School in Colorado.

Nine of the Astros’ first 10 selections were from the college ranks.

The Astros have a $6.747 million signing bonus pool to use to sign their 20 selections.
