D-backs' Lourdes Gurriel Jr. Removed From Game with Injury Concern

In this story:
Arizona Diamondbacks outfielder Lourdes Gurriel Jr. was removed from the Diamondbacks' game two matchup against the Colorado Rockies at Chase Field on Friday night, after appearing to injure himself making a sliding catch in the sixth inning.
Rockies first baseman TJ Rumfield hit a looping, 73 MPH fly ball to shallow left field. It was a bit of a run for Gurriel, who had to go into a slide to make an impressive catch. Immediately upon getting up, he appeared to be in some pain, and a trainer quickly came out to check on the veteran outfielder.
The Diamondbacks later announced that Gurriel was removed from the game with left hamstring tightness. As of this writing, there is no timeline nor indication of severity.
Diamondbacks' Lourdes Gurriel Jr. leaves game with injury

After a discussion with the trainer and manager Torey Lovullo, Gurriel exited the game on foot, without the aid of the cart. Gurriel was replaced by Jorge Barrosa, who took over center field, pushing rookie Ryan Waldschmidt over to left.
It is worth noting he is just under nine months removed from ACL surgery after injuring his right knee on a play in September of 2025. With that in mind, it's relatively good news that his designation did not include any references to his knee.
Though Gurriel did return extremely swiftly from his ACL tear, he has yet to truly get into one of his patented hot streaks thus far in the 2026 season. He's hit to just a .228/.284/.304 slash with one home run since coming back from his knee injury.
The Diamondbacks' offense has been hot of late, so they haven't been in dire need of one of Gurriel's red-hot stretches, but he's certainly struggled to produce at a high level since coming back. He was 1-for-1 with an RBI double and a sacrfice fly. At the time of his removal from the game, he had accounted for both of Arizona's runs.
Where Diamondbacks' outfield situation stands after Gurriel departure

If Gurriel does end up having to miss significant time once again, the Diamondbacks' outfield depth will be relatively thin. Though Waldschmidt and star outfielder Corbin Carroll certainly provide plenty of impact on both offense and defense, it would have to be a combination of Barrosa and Tim Tawa taking over much of the outfield reps.
An extended absence for Gurriel could offer an opportunity to a player like Tommy Troy or Kristian Robinson from Triple-A Reno, though Jordan Lawlar is working his way back toward a return from his fractured wrist, as well.
It is, however, still possible Gurriel's removal was merely out of precaution, and he may simply be given a few days off. Diamondbacks On SI will continue to report the latest.
